He didn’t just want to understand behaviour; he wanted to predict and control it.

Life and Context: The Failed Writer

Born in 1904 in Pennsylvania, Burrhus Frederic Skinner initially wanted to be a novelist. After graduating with an English degree, he spent a “Dark Year” trying to write in his parents’ attic, only to realize he had “nothing to say.”

He pivoted to psychology at Harvard, arriving at a time when the field was desperate to be seen as a “hard science” like physics or biology. Skinner became the champion of Radical Behaviourism, arguing that since we can’t see the “mind,” we shouldn’t waste time studying it. We should only study what we can measure: behaviour.

Core Theories: Operant Conditioning

    Hi Damon, Skinner was our textbook in the 60’s. I chose psych as my compulsory humanities subject while doing a BSc. When it came to doing stats I helped a few of my co- students. And now I see what you just confirmed in your text. Pavlov’s Dog in the digital age.
